Introspection: The examination of one’s own conscious thoughts and feelings; the process of observing one’s mental state; the examination of one’s soul; reflecting looking inward.
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the gift of introspection. To bless yourself with the gift of examining your own thoughts, feelings and emotions and mental state. A period of deep reflection and looking inward. As difficult and sometimes painful as it is – going deeply within is one of the most liberating experiences you can have. To take a good, honest and sometimes hard look at yourself is key to major breakthroughs in your life. Breaking through and breaking free from issues, challenges, behaviors and patterns that plague our lives and keep us from living the joyful, peaceful, loving lives we are meant to live.
Admittedly, this is not an easy process. It takes patience, willingness and perseverance. It also takes a great deal of courage. It is a courageous act to take a good honest look at yourself. To be vulnerable and fully transparent with oneself. To look beyond the carefully crafted persona and façade we present to the external world. To look inward and examine all there is – the good, the bad and the ugly. No one knows the real you, better than you – and only you can take an honest look at who you are. Looking beyond the concerns and perceptions of others about who you are, what you are, or who you should or should not be.
The process of introspection will open the door to significant breakthroughs and revelations. However, genuine introspection will not initially feel like a breakthrough. Initially, the direct opposite will occur. Going within oneself brings up a great deal that we are oftentimes unaware of or unwilling to deal with. Issues that are likely having a detrimental impact on our lives at a subconscious level. The journey of introspection will likely feel as if you’re drudging up issues and memories long forgotten, thought to be thoroughly addressed or at least appropriately suppressed.
While initially difficult, the payoff is immeasurable. Genuine introspection is the key to true personal freedom. Freedom from unconscious thoughts and feelings that hold us back from living our lives to the fullest. While some aspects will be painful there is true purpose in the pain. Thus, it is important to be gentle and allow the process to flow and progress as it will. Revealing what’s within the subconscious mind is difficult, but offers tremendous healing. It presents the opportunity to let go of that which keeps us from moving forward.
A key component of the process of going within requires quieting the mind. It is critical to get beyond the noise, constant thoughts and ceaseless chatter that too often run on autopilot in our minds. The continuous flow of self-judgment and self-criticism. Through quieting our mind, we are able to get to the root cause of our issues and life challenges. It is in within the quieted mind, where we have the opportunity to connect with our souls, our true source of guidance. It is within the quieted mind, that we receive answers to questions and issues we have long sought to resolve.
I know from experience that this is not an easy process. I spent many years avoiding the process of true introspection. Rather than looking deeply within for answers and healing I so desperately sought, I focused on the external and the needs of others. It was much easier to focus on helping others do what I resisted doing for myself. It was much easier to help others process and “solve” their problems, deal with their issues and challenges. To be the hero or “SHEro” in the lives of others – dawning my “Superwoman” cape to help others release pain and resolve their issues.
I now realize that I was offering others that which I truly needed and desired. Offering care, support, a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on – many times at the expense of myself. Too often sacrificing myself to enable others to feel better. For many years, I struggled with allowing others to care for me, to support me, to listen to my problems, challenges and issues. As a result, I presented a well crafted façade that all was well in my world and with me. However, the truth was that I was slowing dying on the inside due to unresolved, suppressed emotions and issues. It was not until I had the courage to journey within, that I realized this at the deepest level. Thank God, I finally came to a place of recognizing that I had to put myself first and fully embrace the process of introspection. It was in my willingness to take this step that would eventually bless me with freedom and offer a joy I had yet to experience in my life.
“All of the answers we seek are within”. On my journey, I heard that message over and over again. I was guided to go inward, to go deeper within for the answers I so desperately sought. However, as I’ve always done, I questioned what that meant. How do you go deeper within? Within where? And was I really prepared to deal with what going within would reveal? Was I prepared to go within to the deepest, darkest places within myself and in my life that I had meticulously shielded and hid from the rest of the world. Was I ready to deal with that which I had avoided for many years? Was I really ready to deal with my stuff?
I am grateful that I eventually heeded the guidance to go within. I had finally come to the place of being ready to deal with my “stuff” and remove the blockages inhibiting me from moving forward in my life. I soon realized that the guidance to go within was the answer to long held prayers for healing. It was there within, that would eventually reveal the greatest blessings. There within, were the answers I had sought for decades. There within waiting for me to acknowledge, speak to and address were those areas that were handicapping and hindering my life. It was through my journey of introspection that I was blessed to heal from unresolved issues, pain and trauma that had tormented me for far too many years.
The journey of introspection, where I was forced to take a good, long, deep look at myself became one of my greatest gifts. To resolve and move past the stories and scenarios we create in our minds is absolutely amazing and truly freeing. I could not have asked for a greater gift. A gift of letting go of that which was holding me back and opening the door to deep healing and living as my authentic self.
It was through this process that I learned that being our true selves – our authentic selves – is the only way we can live our lives to the fullest. And this can only happen, if we are honest with ourselves and others about who we are. If we are willing to take the time to get to know ourselves at a deeper level, and address our unresolved issues. It is this process of deep introspection that enables us to connect deeply with our souls – our internal light and guiding source. It takes courage to go within and connect deeply with our souls in order that we may be delivered and healed from repressed issues. However, the ultimate payoff is immeasurable.
I highly recommend blessing yourself with this gift. The beauty that lies in truly nurturing, examining and supporting yourself is invaluable. Taking time to go within offers release, healing and deep revelations. What might at first seem difficult, will enable you to release those things that too often holds us back from living life to the fullest. It will present the opportunity finally let it all go. Let go of long held beliefs, issues, and feelings that no longer serve any purpose. To finally remove the barriers and blocks to internal joy and happiness. You will truly be surprised by the life changing blessing of this gift – the gift of introspection. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.
